Tanacetum parthenium ‘Orinoco’ (matricaria, feverfew)

Asteraceae

Short lived Hardy Perennial

Full sun

Ht. 1.2m

1L recycled plastic pot

An easily grown, clump forming hardy perennial with feathery soft and aromatic, bright green foliage and clusters of semi-double creamy yellow - white daisy flowers.  Matricaria likes full sun and good drainage, but is not overly fussy, self seeds readily and is dry tolerant once established. Though perennial, as a cut flower, matricaria is often grown as an annual or short lived perennial as it’s productivity can decrease over time. To circumvent this I often cultivate from cuttings, or winter divisions regularly to have continuously highly productive stock.

Cut Flower Notes

I have learned my lesson to pinch T. ‘Orinoco’, as though it has a branching habit naturally, the stems tend to tall and unwieldy if left to own devices. Cut back hard after flowering to encourage repeat flowering - though these stems are often smaller. Matricaria needs to be picked in the cool of the day and given a good soak to condition before use.  It is best to remove as many leaves as possible too as they have high water needs and can yellow quickly.
