Gladiolus papillio (butterfly gladioli)
Syn. G. purpurea-auratus
Iridaceae
Hardy Perennial
Sun to light shade
Ht. 1m in flower
1L recycled plastic pot
Thin grey green sword shaped leaves grow from abundant small yellow tinged corms, that produce many cormlets and multiply readily. They flower in January/February on arching stems, bearing up to ten flowers in coffee cream with a purple and yellow throat marking. Prefers well drained soil, especially over winter and sun to light shade. At least 5 corms per pot.
Cut Flower Notes
One of my favorite cutting flowers - they grace any bouquet with their unique dancing movement and their beautiful subtle tones blends with many colour combinations. Best picked when one or two flowers are just open and buds will continue to open in the vase.
